Robert Pattinson meet Channing Tatum… maybe. The Edward Cullen star could be working with Tatum in the third “Twilight” sequel “Eclipse.” Although nothing is set in stone, “Eclipse” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg says she “desperately” wants Tatum for the part of vampire “Riley.”
Some think he could be Rob’s competitor for Twi fans’ hearts, but that seems unlikely. While Channing, a former male model, is already a huge gay icon, he’s also engaged to be married to dancer Jenna Dewan.
One thing is certain, however, his career is rocketing like Rob's. Tatum, 29, recently starred to solid reviews in the movie, “Fighting,” which opened this month. He will appear later in summer’s big-budget movie, “G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra” and “Dear John,” based on the Nicholas Sparks novel. He also plays Pretty Boy Floyd in Johnny Depp’s 1930s gangster drama “Public Enemies.”
His break out role came in 2008’s “Stop Loss,” a surprise hit that also won critical acclaim. It’s about soliders confronted with second and third tours in Iraq under the Bush Administration’s “stop loss” policy, which prevented soldiers from leaving the service at the end of their terms.
Those experiences would make him a good fit for Eclipse. "There’s a very big battle at the end with Riley, and I think Channing would do that so well,” Rosenberg said of the studly star.
"And there are some complexities to that character. He really is tragic. He’s a puppet for Victoria. So he has to break your heart a little bit at the end when he realizes that she doesn’t want him. Channing could do that beautifully."
If Tatum accepts the role, he will also join Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Ashley Greene, Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning who now make up the core of the movie’s cast. They are now in Canada filming Twilight sequel "New Moon."
Tatum and Pattinson share many traits. Both are quiet, introspective and unassuming. “Honest to God, to my soul I have no idea what to think. It doesn’t really make sense to me yet because nothing has dropped yet,” he said recently about his new-found stardom.
“’Step Up’ was probably my most famous film and it’s a kids dance movie. So I could get a date at any elementary school, but no one else knows who I am.” Channing met former Justin Timberlake backup dancer Dewan on the set of the movie.
His killer physique landed him early work as a male model working for clients such as Armani and Abercrombie & Fitch. He also landed national spots for Mountain Dew and Pepsi, and appeared in several music videos.
“I've been able to explore life, and through exploring it I've found that I love art, I love writing, I love acting, I love all the things that make sense to me,” he says of his career so far. “And I've been given the chance to go out and see the world, and to see all the things out there. Not everyone gets that chance."
